New York City intends to serve a half-million Halal meals during the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, in the leading edge of a program that could feed as many as 2 million residents unable to pay for food, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
About 400,000 Halal meals will be distributed at 32 Department of Education buildings and another 100,000 will be served through community organizations during the month. The city also provides Kosher meals for Jews. It’s part of a program that has served at least 10 million grab-and-go meals at 435 sites and via taxi to housebound New Yorkers, at a cost of at least $170 million, the mayor said.
“One of Ramadan’s most noble callings is to feed the hungry,” de Blasio said during a Thursday news briefing. “To remember to be there for those in need. And that is now harder than ever now that people can’t go to their mosques.”
City officials expect the food crisis to become more acute. The mayor has estimated the city will lose at least 475,000 jobs due to the lockdown forced by the Covid-19 pandemic.
De Blasio said city officials expect to provide at least 10 million meals this month, and are prepared to serve 15 million in May. The mayor gave no ultimate cost estimate. “No New Yorker will go hungry,” he vowed. “Your city will provide.”

He has never done this with any other community. Earlier that same day, masses of New Yorkers ignored social distancing rules as crowds came out to watch the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds flyover, and the mayor had no comment. And blame for the horridly unsafe conditions on the city’s subways, of course, lies with city mismanagement under his watch. De Blasio’s selective and biased criticism of Jews cannot be tolerated by decent New Yorkers.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is facing harsh scrutiny today after criticizing thousands of Orthodox Jews who attended the funeral of a prominent rabbi who succumbed to the coronavirus.
Police broke up the Brooklyn funeral of Rabbi Chaim Mertz, reportedly attended by 2,500 people, for violating Governor Andrew Cuomo’s shutdown orders.
De Blasio went so far as to go to the funeral with police before posting a controversial tweet: my message to the Jewish community, and all communities, is this simple: the time for warnings has passed. I have instructed the NYPD to proceed immediately to summons or even arrest those who gather in large groups. This is about stopping this disease and saving lives. Period.
The mayor’s response drew swift condemnation. While critics did not appear to dispute whether the funeral was a violation of social distancing rules — which call for staying at least six feet apart and limit large gatherings — they questioned de Blasio’s language toward the city’s Jewish population over the incident, months after a rash of anti-Semitic attacks in the New York metropolitan area. New York City Councilman Kalman Yeger, who is Jewish, accused de Blasio of treating Jews differently from other populations.
“Mr. Mayor, your words are unacceptable,” Yeger tweeted. “To condemn our entire community over one group of people is something you would not do to any other ethnic group, and I know you long enough to know that you know this.”
