As the rest of us wonder what the next few weeks will look like in our country, some of the top defense employees in the Defense Department are running for the hills.
Or rather, an underground bunker in Colorado.
This is not reassuring.
Newswars reports that on March 24th, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) & the US’ Northern Command (NORTHCOM) held a Facebook Live town hall meeting where they informed the public their essential teams in charge of homeland security are isolating themselves at the Cheyenne Mountain bunker amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
Air Force General Terrence O’Shaughnessy, the commander of NORAD and NORTHCOM, told reporters during the streaming session that essential staff are being moved from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado to the underground bunker 24 miles away.
The complex is more than 2,000 feet underground and is built to withstand a 30 megaton nuclear explosion.
To ensure that we can defend the homeland despite this pandemic, our command and control watch teams here in the headquarters split into multiple shifts and portions of our watch team began working from Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, creating a third team at an alternate location as well,” O’Shaughnessy said.
“Our dedicated professionals of the NORAD and NORTHCOM command and control watch have left their homes, said goodbye to their families and are isolated from everyone to ensure that they can stand the watch each and every day to defend our homeland.
It’s certainly not optimal, but it’s absolutely necessary and appropriate given the situation.”
According to The Drive, NORAD and NORTHCOM have already used up about 30% of the underground facility. With the increased personnel, O’Shaughnessy said, his “primary concern was … are we going to have the space inside the mountain for everybody who wants to move in there, and I’m not at liberty to discuss who’s moving in there.”
If any of the staff in the bunker are infected, a team of higher-ranking military officials operating at another facility can assume command of the operation remotely.
On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order allowing the Defense and Homeland Security Departments to activate the National Guard and reservists to combat the coronavirus outbreak.
The United States is currently in the “acceleration phase” of the outbreak, meaning the crisis could get considerably worse over the next weeks.
This was supported by remarks made by President Donald Trump in a Rose Garden address on Sunday, where he extended coronavirus prevention orders to April 30th.
