Are Anti-Trump Factions Hyping Coronavirus Pandemic?

Back in June 2018, Bill Maher, the comedian, political commentator, and television host declared that he was hoping for a crashing U.S. economy to “get rid of [President Donald] Trump.”

Now, less than two years later, the COVID-19 pandemic has infected thousands of people globally and is driving our country’s economy into a recession.

This can be just a coincidence, perhaps, but the response of some liberal left media to the current emergency raises several concerns that the situation is not mere coincidence.

Theoretically speaking, if you want to aggravate an epidemic, you need to do mainly two things. First, stop the innate immunity that develops against the offending organism due to incremental exposure to small amounts of its antigens on daily basis.

The second is to fight the best available treatment for it.

One approach to achieve the first tactical goal is to lock people in their homes rather that isolate only the sick ones.

I have found it strange to see the liberal media support locking people in their homes and shutting down the schools without clear evidence that such draconian measures will work. The model for this action was the Chinese government locking down the city of Wuhan.

But selectively promoting the “locking down” approach, while ignoring other measures used in China to contain the epidemic, constitutes an unscientific position, because we now know that the significant decline of COVID-19 cases in China correlates more with recommending the medication chloroquine, on Feb. 15, rather than instituting the citywide lockdown on Jan. 23.

Likewise, our media have been largely silent about the amazing success of South Korea in fighting the coronavirus. South Korea today enjoys the lowest death rate from infections among the countries most affected (3.06%), as well as a significantly declining curve of new cases of the disease.

In fact, the total deaths in South Korea have declined to only 3 deathes per million compared to 124 and 73 cases per million in Italy and Spain respectively.

Something else regarding South Korea. The liberal left media have been focusing the use of testing in that country, as if it were the only measure taken to achieve success against the pandemic. But they have paid no comparable attention to the fact that on Feb. 13, South Korea added hydroxychloroquine (a less toxic derivative of chloroquine) to the treatment protocol guidelines of the disease.

I find the rush to close schools and colleges across the country similarly curious. School closures as a vital tactic to end the corona epidemic faces scientific and statistical challenges alike. The governments of Australia and Singapore have refused to shut their schools down despite their high travel rates with China — the origin and epicenter of the epidemic.

So far, Australia, with a population of 26 million, has suffered only thirteen deaths from COVID-19 cases, and Singapore (population 5.7 million) has reported only two.

Compare this to Italy and Spain (populations 60 million and 45 million, respectively) whose governments moved aggressively to close their schools and quarantine their populations — but have not yet added chloroquine/Azithromycin to their treatment regimens. So far, Italy has reported 8215 deaths, and Spain’s death toll has passed 4365.

The evidence remains anecdotal but compelling. Australia and Singapore — both of which have refused to shut their schools and quarantine their people — have thus far escaped the death tolls hitting Italy and Spain. It seems likely that the people of Australia and Singapore have developed some form of innate immunity because of exposure to small levels of the COVID-19 antigens present in daily life.

Why, then, do so many of our media outlets continue to push for keeping our schools shuttered and our people isolated in their homes despite the miserable failure of such tactics in Italy and Spain?

Do our media actually want the United States to emulate Italy and Spain?

Worse, some politicians here are fighting some measures now showing promise. For example, the governor of Nevada has banned the use of chloroquine to treat coronavirus patients. Additionally, several liberal left media highlight only the side effects of Chloroquine without giving similar attention to its amazing potential in saving lives and treating corona infected patients.

I cannnot help but suspect that certain media and political concerns are pushing for tactics that guarantee nothing except the further spread of the epidemic because they want a disastrous outcome for the country.

In that way, they seem to be reasoning, they can “get rid of Trump” and re-ascend to power and prominence atop the ashes of their wrongheaded outcome.
