Devin Nunes says ‘people are going to go to jail’ over Durham report

According to The Blaze, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) said Thursday that he’s “confident” that “people are going to go to jail” over the “Russia grand fiasco and the Russia hoax,” once Special Counsel John Durham’s report on his investigation into the matter is released.

“I’m still positive, and I guess I have to be, that people are going to go to jail, and they are going to be prosecuted for the Russia grand fiasco and the Russia hoax,” Nunes told the Sara Carter Show podcast.

The California Republican added that some of the bad behavior that might be uncovered might not be criminal, which would lead to the necessity of congressional action to change rules or statutes in order to prevent similar behavior in the future.

Nunes admitted that the report might not be everything many Republicans have hoped for, but pointed to multiple criminal referrals that were made by Republicans even before the report was released.

“Some major perpetrators”

“It may not be as broad as we want it to be,” Nunes said, according to the Washington Examiner. “But look, there are some major perpetrators. I think, as you and everybody else know, we’ve made over 14 criminal referrals. That doesn’t mean 14 individuals. That means 14 different criminal referrals involving multiple individuals.”

Nunes noted that more investigations could follow if U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland attempts to stifle the investigation or bury Durham’s report.

“That would be a big issue, especially if Republicans get control back of the Congress because we have subpoena power,” Nunes said.

Durham launched the investigation in 2019, and many Republicans had hoped for a report before the 2020 election, which would have obviously been an advantage for the party in an already tumultuous election season.

Only Clinesmith convicted so far

So far, the probe has only resulted in one conviction, which was former FBI attorney Kevin Clinesmith, who pleaded guilty to falsifying a document used to renew FISA warrants to spy on Carter Page, a then-Trump campaign aide.

Clinesmith apologized for his actions and said they were only done to save time. As a result, he didn’t receive any prison time and was only sentenced to a year of probation and 400 hours of community service.

Certainly, the Durham investigation has dragged on for a long time for nothing of any significance to be reported when it is finally completed and revealed to the public, at least that’s the hope of many.

It is unclear whether Durham is waiting for a politically opportune time to release the report, or whether he still has wrongdoing to uncover in his investigation.
