The Forgotten Refugees – 1,000,000 Jews Expelled (Documentary)

In 1945 there were up to one million Jews living in the Middle East and North Africa outside the Palestine Mandate – communities dating back more than three millennia. Today, there are only several thousand remaining. Who are these Jews? What precipitated their mass-exodus in the 20th century? Where did they go? And why do we always hear about the Palestinian refugees, while few know that these Jewish refugees even existed?

The Forgotten Refugees is a film about the mass exodus of up to one million Jews from Arab countries In 1945, up to one million Jews lived in the Middle East outside of the Palestine Mandate and in North Africa. Within a few years, only a few thousand remained. This is the story of the thousands who fled their homes, who endured in refugee camps, and who today quietly carry the memory of a destroyed civilization. The Forgotten Refugees explores the history and destruction of Middle Eastern Jewish communities, some of which had existed for over 2,500 years. Featuring testimony from Jews who fled Egypt, Libya, Iraq and Yemen, these personal stories of refugees are interspersed with dramatic archival footage, including rescue missions of Yemenite and Iraqi Jews.

Produced and originally distributed by ‘The David Project’, this documentary tells the forgotten stories of the Mizrahi Jewish communities in the Arab world who faced consistent oppression, apartheid, and genocide throughout history. The tragedies experiences by the Mizrahi Jewish community have long been ignored and sometimes totally dismissed as ‘rumor’. The film features testimonies, footage, and documented evidence of the struggle of Mizrahi Jews in the Arab world and the unwavering determination to preserve both their culture and faith.
